Sikkidre Shikari Illadidre Bhikari (Bird Trapper or Beggar)
82 min | 2017 | Kannada, Waghri boli with English subtitles
Based on SIEDS’s long term association with the tribal community of the Hakki Pikkis and forest dwelling Iruligas, one of the collective members took the initiative of making a documentary film to capture the unique livelihood choices of this nomadic and enterprising community. Produced by BFS and made along with members of the community the film is the product of a series of conversations with the community across different settlements in Karnataka. The name is derived from the way a popular expression the community uses to describe itself.
The Hakki Pikkis are a free spirited nomadic tribe who began their wandering many generations ago in the North Western part of the Indian subcontinent but have travelled through and settled in different states of the country. They make a living by trapping small game in the forest and selling them along with lucky charms and trinkets. If the trap fails, begging is the next bet! With their traditional ways of life outlawed, the community share their stories of wit and survival.
